Lagginhorn 4010 m Route archive

Seen from Saas-Fee, the Lagginhorn clearly dominates the scene with its broad countenance. The mountain stands out for its width and the long rock ledges, which hold remnants of the Lagginhorn Glacier. The northernmost rise in the ridge forms the main summit (4010 m), which has been graced with a beautiful cross.

With the Weissmieshütte, the cable car to Hohsaas and the Laggin bivouac, the Lagginhorn has been well developed and is relatively accessible.

Like many mountains in the Saas Valley, the Lagginhorn has a strange name whose origin lies in the dark. On old maps the mountain was called "Laquinhorn". The Saracen influence is debated, but it makes sense: Arab. 'allâqîn = hanging over. The Saas people of today call the mountain "ts Lagg'ii".

The Lagginhorn is not a simple mountain. Every year fatal accidents happen on the normal descent. Often Fletschhorn and Lagginhorn are crossed during an entertaining tour; for this it is better to start with the Fletschhorn.
