This heavily glaciated mountain landscape, with the great bulks of Susten - and Gwächtenhorn, is impressive to all who journey over the Sustenpass. The Sustenhorn, the highest peak in this impressive cirque, is a much visited and very popular destination, both in summer and in winter. Given its dominance, it is not surprising that the Sustenhorn was already climbed in 1841 for the first time. The climbers then made the journey on foot from Innertkirchen. The normal route to the Sustenhorn is an ideal beginner's tour and offers fantastic views of the Uri and Bernese Alps. The difficulties are moderate and most of the time the route is well tracked. The ideal starting point is the Tierbergli hut, which can, as an alternative to walking, be reached via a nice via ferrata.
