A balcony made of sharp-edged primary rock
On this tour white-blue-white markings and rusty red cairns guide us through pathless, alpine and mostly secluded landscapes. The views include sheer endless rows of granite slabs, ruptured glacier tongues and the mighty peaks of Hinter Tierberg, Eggstock and Dammastock. At the end another gem awaits us: a crystal clear mountain lake called Bergsee (i.e. mountain lake).
Route description
Chelenalphütte–Bergseehütte
From Chelenalphütte (2335 m) follow the trail northward towards Sustenlimi, which at first crosses a torrent then zigzags up steeply (some fixed ropes, but easy terrain throughout). At P. 2592 leave the path to Sustenlimi and branch off right to take the path to Bergseehütte marked white-blue-white. Now hike on stable scree past P. 2558 and P. 2607 to a large cairn on the rocky outcrop separating Hinter Mur and Vorder Mur. Several torrents must be crossed and in early summer fields of old snow are slippery and at risk of collapsing. The large cairns offer a good resting place with a splendid view. Continue descending through Vorder Mur to reach, past huge granite boulders, Bergsee (2341 m) and Bergseehütte (2370 m) nearby.

Just above Chelenalphütte some fixed ropes help to overcome easy rocky steps. Afterwards one hikes mostly pathless through rough, but fairly easy terrain with boulders until Bergseehütte. In early summer some precarious old snow fields which fall away sharply often need to be traversed; an ice axe or hiking poles can be helpful. The trail is well marked.
