From Fiescheralp (Normal route) Konkordiahütte SAC 2850 m

  • Difficulty
    F
  • Ascent
    5–6 h, 1050 m

A very long, but technically simple hut approach, from Fiescheralp over the Aletsch glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. Start at the mountain station of the Fiesch - Fiescheralp cable car, cross the alpine meadows and pass through the long tunnel which takes you to Märjela. From here join the Aletsch glacier below the former site of Märjelasee. Only small lakes and ponds remain of what was once a large lake here; a wide variety of thriving alpine flora now makes up for it. Follow a long stretch of the more central moraine of the Aletsch Glacier, surrounded by high mountains, and finally reach the hut via a marked track which winds its up high above Konkordiaplatz (the meeting point of three glaciers which causes the two iconic stripes that travel the glaciers length).

Route description

Fiescheralp - Märjela - Grosser Aletschgletscher
From Fiescheralp follow the wide gravel road to the tunnel entrance and pass through to find the Gletscherstube Märjela (restaurant). From here follow the path slightly downhill past the Märjelensee and join the glacier at a suitable place southeast of P. 2266.
Märjela - Grosser Aletschgletscher - Southern hut approach
Follow the Grosser Aletschgletscher, at first crossing over to and remaining closer to the central moraine, later moving towards the eastern lateral moraine and the southern foot of the hut rocks (about 2660 m). Approx. 50 m above the glacier, there is a red marking and a flag above the entrance to the south trail. There you leave the glacier.
Southern hut approach - Konkordiahütte
At first, traces of a track are followed though active moraine debris. Later, by way of short ladders and wooden steps the trail ascends steeply up the slope for around 150 meters. Some passages are secured by ropes.
