The ascent to the Konkordiahütte from the Jungfraujoch is actually more of a descent (a nice change). Leaving the Joch, descend the Jungfraufirn to the wide open expanse of Konkordiaplatz before climbing back up the ladders to gain the hut. A very scenic tour through one of the largest ice landscapes in the Alps. In good conditions, the tour is easy. Depending on the state of the glacier, however, large crevasses on the Jungfraufirn can cause considerable problems. At the Konkordiaplatz the route in mid-summer may be equipped with temporary bridges, making it possible to cross the large streams which invariably flow along the surface.
Route description
Jungfraujoch - Konkordiahütte
From the station of the Jungfraujoch (3454 m) you can reach the Jungfraufirn (glacier) through the Sphinx tunnel. From here descend down to a first flat glacier basin and on to the next hollow at about 3200 m. Continue to descend parallel to the Trugberg in the flatter terrain to the south of P. 2763. This is where the Jungfraufirn and Ewigschneefäld glaciers come together. Cross the moraine and then the glacier stream. After the crossing of the stream you climb a bit towards Ewigschneefäld and contour round to the southern foot of the Grünegg. Here cross a second moraine and, ascending slightly, gain the metal stairs that lead to the hut (these are visible from afar).
