Mont Blanc de Cheilon 3870 m Alpinism

Mont Blanc de Cheilon, a big three-thousander, is located between the Col de la Serpentine and the Col de Cheilon. It is framed by the Pigne d'Arolla to the east and by the slightly higher La Ruinette to the southwest. It is a massive, impressive block of a mountain, very compact on its north side. The central north face was once heavily covered with ice and firn, but today it is rather more rocky, which is why alpinists who venture there do so in the winter and spring to benefit from better conditions. The south side has the shape of a horseshoe, which embraces the upper slopes of Glacier de la Serpentine. The mountain has five distinctive ridges.

Options for overnighting are the Cabane des Dix, the Cabane de Chanrion and the Cabane des Vignettes. Other starting points are Mauvoisin and the Bivouac de l'Aiguillette à la Singla.

The name Mont Blanc is clear. But so as to not confuse this peak with its big brother above Chamonix, the local name Cheilon (Patois cheilon, from Gallic caljavo, Latin caliavum, French caillou = rocky area, boulder field, gravel bed) was also added. The name Cheilon is also given to the glacier and nearby pass.
