Burg is a very sunny tour for beginners, which is best undertaken on a cold day in high winter. The first 750 metres of vertical height are negotiated by the bus running from Grindelwald to Bussalp. Be careful when skiing on the road which is used as a sledging run, or when crossing it. Descending to the Schwendi railway station is only possible on a few days in high winter. The bus takes you back to Grindelwald, if the descent ends earlier.
Route description
Bussalp - Burg
From Bussalp (1796 m) ascend north-eastward on the sledging run to reach Oberläger (2021 m). Now continue westward to Burgnollen (2148 m) and ascend the north-east face to the summit.
Variant: descent to Schwendi
Descend to Bussalp on the ascent. If there is sufficient snow, you can ski down to Schwendi, the major part off the sledging run. Ski down to Holzmattenläger (bus stop) using the sledging run. Then descend southward in pastures to reach the trail east of Unterläger. Take the trail south-eastward, leading steeply down to the In Matten clearing. Continue to the bridge across the Abbach (1256 m) and the hairpin bend at P. 1240 (Weidli, bus stop and bar). If there is still sufficient snow, east of the creek you can continue to descend south-westward in pastures to reach the main street (931 m) and ultimately the Schwendi railway station.
