Relatively safe approach high above the Glacier de Zinal. The rocky couloir "Le Nant" and old gallery can be bypassed via a short suspension bridge (as of 2016).
Route description
Zinal - Bridge over the Zinal stream (1908 m)
From Zinal (1675 m) follow the paved road southwards to the bridge at P. 1674 over the La Navisence river. On the left (W) bank, pass the sports field and continue to the bridge at 1730 m (turn off for Pas du Chasseur). Continue straight on, up through the forest to Le Vichiesso (1855 m, large cross). Follow the wide, mostly horizontal path then cross the Zinal stream to the east (left).

Turn to the right (SE) and ascend the increasingly steep slopes of Moming to reach the first rock band. Bypass this to the left, then climb in tight bends up to the 2300 m line, before heading south to a ridge line (you join this at ca. 2430). Ascend this slightly, then cross the hollow behind it and continue across the broads western flanks of Besso. After the Tsina de Vio (a small mountain stream) comes Le Nant, an avalanche couloir bordered on both sides by steep cliffs (unmarked on the map). Since 2016 the gallery with its rope railings and steps is no longer used; a suspension bridge now makes it easier to cross this formidable obstacle. Next, the path crosses benath the SW ridge of the Besso and above Grépon, before turning SE onto a talus and scree slope. With minimal height gain, the path leads up to the SW foot of Le Mammouth and finally flat over to the hut (2886 m).
