The trail of the ibex

A trail with a splendid view brings us from Capanna Scaletta on the edge of the Greina high plain on rocky terrain to Lago Retico. This lake was once praised as the most beautiful mountain lake of The Grisons, whereas it is entirely in Ticino territory. The trail is also called the «Sentiero degli stambecchi» (The ibex trail) and you will very likely encounter a few of them. At the end the trail leads down to Capanna Bovarina on strange, geologically interesting terrain.

Route description

Capanna Scaletta – Pian Geirètt

From Capanna Scaletta (2205 m) go towards Greina at first, then cross the creek to the left, continue to P. 2148 in an arch and descend directly to Pian Geirètt (2012 m). If you want to keep the altitude, leave the trail at ca. 2040 m and branch off right, hike around the scree plain of Pian Geirètt on a trail and reach the cross and the parking lot from the north-west. It is possible to descend very directly from the cabin to Pian Geirètt, but the trail is very steep and only recommended for those who are absolutely sure-footed and unafraid of heights (T4, exposed, slippery).

Pian Geirètt – Pass d'Uffiern

From the cross at the parking lot of Pian Geirètt follow the white-blue-white marked trail north-westward to the base of a spur bordering the Cento Valli and leading to Pass d’Uffiern. Ascend south-westward on the spur via P. 2315 and P. 2465. At ca. 2600 m, leave the spur and go gradually up to the left to reach Pass d’Uffiern (2628 m, there is a locked army barrack).

Pass d'Uffiern – Lago Retico

At first the «Sentiero degli stambecchi» runs slightly left of the border southward on rocky knolls towards the shoulder at P. 2761 and then continues to the ridge of Sasso Lanzone. Close to P. 2826 it leaves the crest and descends steeply southward (fixed rope). Traversing the rocky south-east face of Cima di Garina, you reach without further difficulties the shoulder at P. 2595 and from there Lago Retico (2372 m).

Lago Retico – Capanna Bovarina

From Lago Retico a mountain trail leads down southward on steep, sunny slopes. After Orlone you cross the creek running through Val d’Inferno at P. 1964, where you choose the trail branching off left. Following this trail and crossing another creek you reach the striking wooden building of Capanna Bovarina (1870 m).

Difficulty / Material: Some passages between Pian Geirett and Pass d'Uffiern are equipped with chains (the route has been adjusted in 2020). The stretch between Pass d’Uffiern and Sasso Lanzone leading through a lot of scree is pathless, but well marked; it requires caution. A steep passage on the descent is equipped with a fixed rope. Otherwise there are no technical difficulties to speak of.
