Der Bärentritt kann bei viel Schnee oder bei Vereisung heikel sein. Dann gilt es den etwas längeren Aufstieg via Holzfad mit Start beim Hotel Doldenhorn in Betracht zu ziehen.
Route description
Kandersteg – Bärentritt (WARNING! Approach via Bärentritt closed due to "Spitzer Stein Bergsturz")
From Kandersteg train station (1176 m) cross the river, and the main road, heading E in the direction of Öschiwald, and staying south of the Öschibach (stream). Follow the track through the forest (a sledging track when there is enough snow) until the junction of the hut path (approx. 1340 m, signpost). Follow the path S to a cliff (slash overhanging pile of choss).
Bärentritt
Climb the Bärentritt (1468 m) beneath looming choss, which, with the help of some climbing aids (steps/ cables - if they haven't fallen off) plus the tracks of ice climbers, can be rather more amenable than it looks in winter.
Bärentritt – steile Rinne
Continue southeast after the Bärentritt, and cross the bridge at 1510 m, bear SE and climb up to approx. 1560 m. It is best to follow signs of the summer path from here up through some steeper terrain.
steile Rinne – Obere Biberg
Zig-zag up through steeper terrain, following roughly the line of the summer path.
Obere Biberg – Doldenhornhütte
The terrain flattens out and the forest thins. From P. 1817 you are free to turn NE and cross gentle open ground to gain the hut.
Variant Section 1: Hinder de Büele – Dürreschwand (The only advisable route at present)
From Kandersteg, follow the road south to Hinder de Büele (P. 1181), then southeast to the Waldhotel Doldenhorn. Climb the steep path up through the forest to Dürreschwand.
Variant Section 2: Dürreschwand – Undere Biberg
From Dürreschwand follow the path more or less flat round past P. 1523 to just before the bridge. Then turn right, joining the original approach.

The "Bärentritt" can be tricky with a lot of snow or ice. In this case it is best to consider the somewhat longer ascent via the forest path starting from the Hotel Doldenhorn.
