A somewhat irksome approach...

The ascent to the Fründenhütte begins comfortably for most: by cable car to Oeschinensee (this eliminates the first 500 vertical metres). From there follow the mountain road east down to Bim Oeschinensee (1594 m, restaurant/hotel, 1 hour on foot from Kandersteg). From there the path leads SE, leisurely along the lake shore at first, then through the forest, before winding steeply up between rock bands, which seem impenetrable from below. After crossing several water polished stream beds comes a spot to rest. After that its relentless zig-zags lead up the last 500 vertical metres to the hut.

Route description

Bergstation - Oeschinensee

Take the cable car from Kandersteg to the Oeschinensee mountain station. Follow the yellow marked hiking path / road (right hand, southern variant) to the lake.

Oeschinensee - I de Fründe - Fründenhütte

Follow the southern shore of Oeschinensee (lake) and into the forest. Later the path zig-zags steeply up through the rock bands "I de Fründe", before crossing several glacial streams to a good resting point. Finally climb steeply southwards to the Fründenhütte, perched on a moraine hill not far from the Fründen glacier.

Variant: on foot from Kandersteg

From Kandersteg train station (1176 m) first follow the road, then the hiking path east along the Öschibach up to the Oeschinensee, where you'll meet the normal approach from the top cable car station.

Difficulty / Material: Well maintained mountain path, some slightly exposed spots. North facing: snow remains long in spring. Watch out for verglas in early spring and autumn
