From the North (Normal route) Gältehore / Geltenhorn 3065 m

  • Difficulty
    PD, I
  • Ascent
    3:30–3:30 h, 1070 m

The Geltenhorn, or Gältehore as the locals know it, is after to the Arpelistock one of the westernmost peaks of the Bernese Alps. The Galtehore is a nice, three-thousand metre peak and a prominent summit in the long mountain chain that stretches between the Arpelistock and Wildhorn. Although less frequented, the mountain has all the necessary ingredients, such as scenic walking, glaciers and a nice bit of rock climbing near the summit, to make it a worthwhile tour. Overall, a recommended, relatively light alpine tour in a unique environment. This route is also ideal as a descent after a climb of the E-ridge or after the Arpelistock - Gältehore traverse.

Route description

Geltenhütte - Rottal (valley)
From the Geltenhütte (2004 m), follow the path to the Arpelistock starting out northeast from the hut, before turning swiftly southwest to enter the Rottal (Red Valley). After crossing the bridge northwest of P. 2057, follow the western edge of the Rottal. On good tracks follow a pronounced and grassy moraine up to a large flatter area.
Rottal (valley)- Gältegletscher
By the flatter areas, leave the grassy morraine and follow the slightly descending tracks to a trough and then climb up to P. 2425. A small step leads to a debris cone, the tracks then lead from here eastwards through rocky slabs to gain the Galtegletscher above P. 2579.
Gältegletscher- Gältehore Summit
Alight the glacier and climb in a south-westerly direction towards the summit. Below the summit rocks arc leftwards (southeast) to the foot of a faint rock spur, which is reached over a short steep slope. Now continue on the east ridge and over this easily to the summit.
