It is a multifaceted cabin access trail combined with a unique funicular.

The scenic ascent leads through an impressive granite landscape with lakes, waterfalls, slabs polished by the glacier and alluvial plains. It is suited for families, if the children have some mountain experience.

Route description

Gelmersee summit station– Gelmerhütte

From Gelmersee follow the white-red-white marked mountain trail on the somewhat exposed north shore, then ascend rather steeply up to Gelmerhütte.

Variant Gelmersee south shore

Gelmersee can be hiked along a trail on the south shore: very nice alternative which allows for variations on the ascent and the descent. Add roughly 30 min., T3–.

Gelmersee

Difficulty / Material: The entire itinerary is marked white-red-white. Along the lake you will encounter several exposed passages. The trail is precarious in wet, snowy and icy conditions.

Waypoints

Handegg, Kunzentännlein (1597 m)

Starting point of the cabin access trail directly from the Grimsel pass road (for example outside the funicular’s operating hours or in case of huge crowds). Add an hour as compared to the trail from Gelmersee.
