From the North (Engstligenalp) (Normal route) Grossstrubel 3243 m

  • Difficulty
    PD
  • Ascent
    4–5 h, 1300 m

Rewarding and popular high mountain tour. The snow remains usually long into the season on the N side of the Grossstrubel. So the tour is still suitable after midsummer. To reach the Strubelgletscher above the Flyschweng you follow a clearly visible path. After crossing the Strubelgletscher you reach the actual key point of the tour. Due to glacial retreat of the Strubelgletscher, direct access to the "Früestücksplatze" (breakfast stop) in summer is no longer possible. You now head for the Ammertengrat a bit lower down by crossing a rocky band. Metal bars and bolts offer good security possibilities. The remainder of the tour is technically quite easy. Glacier equipment is still needed despite the massive glacier retreat.

Route description

Engstligenalp - Gruebi
From the mountain station Engstligenalp (1965 m) first follow the main track, then take the left hand trail leading through Läger to Gruebi (both on the map).
Gruebi - Strubelgletscher
From Gruebi, branch off from the broad hiking trail and ascend on a clear path up the steep flank of Flyschweng to P. 2690 on the eastern moraine of the Strubelgletscher. Continue up to around 2700m before striking out across the glacier.
Strubelgletscher - Grossstrubel
At about 2700 m, alight the often crevassed Strubelgletscher and cross it westwards to reach gravel ledges ca. 2800 m leading up round a rocky spur to the main Ammertengrat. Signs of a track plus metal rods and bolts lead you safely up to the ridge, a little southeast of P. 2827. Climb up the ridge itself to the Früestuckplatz ca. 2940 m. From here you cross a steep snow or scree slope (difficult when icy) in a southwest direction and pass beneath the rocky ridge on a good track to meet the Ammertengletscher around 3000 m (from here, the Strubeljoch, 3092 m, can be easily reached in a few minutes). For the Grossstubel head east through southeast along the glacier and stagger up the final rocks to stand upon the summit.

Engstligenalp (1962 m)

Mountain station of the cable car Unter dem Birg – Engstligenalp. Further information at: www.engstligenalp.ch

Difficulty

Der direkte Zugang vom Strubelgletscher zum Früestücksplatz ist im Sommer nicht zu empfehlen (Steinschlag). Der Strubelgletscher ist oft recht spaltenreich.
