A long ascent through some unspoilt terrain.

The hike through the Maderanertal (valley) to Hüfistöcklenen - the beautifully located shoulder on which the Hüfihütte stands, is loooong. The possibility of a taxi ride to Alp Guferen tames it somewhat, and the valley's original and wild surroundings with their roaring waterfalls, plus of course the great hospitality at the Hüfihütte, make the journey worthwhile. A detour to Berghotel Maderanertal on Balmenegg is also worthwhile. At the request of his mountain friends in Basel, the majority of whom belonged to the SAC that had been founded shortly before, the original builder, Albin Indergand, did not call the hotel "Zum Balmenwald" as originally planned, but "Zum Schweizerischen Alpenclub". That is why we still speak of the "SAC Hotel" on Balmenegg today, even though it is actually called the Berghotel Maderanertal.

Route description

Golzern, valley station - Legni - Stössi - Balmenschachen

From the bus stop at the Golzern cablecar station (832 m), the wide hiking path leads along Chärstelenbach stream via Legni, Rüteli and Alp Stössi into the rear Maderanertal valley to Balmenschachen.

Balmenschachen - Gufern - Blindensee - Riedbödmer - Hüfihütte

Take the hiking path to Guferen, crossthe bridge and follow the north bank of the Chärstelenbach (stream) to the huts of Blindensee (1374 m) and on to the bridge at Riedbödmer (1432 m). Cross the Chärstelenbach (again) and climb the well marked path diagonally across the flank of Rimenen to the Hüfihütte. Up to Guferen (1275 m) is possible by Taxi.

Variant: Balmenschachen - Balmenegg - Butzli - Riedbödmer

You can also ascend via Balmenegg and its old "SAC Hotel" (now called Berghotel Maderanertal) higher along on the north side of the valley, then join the normal path from Riedbödmer on.
