Klettergebiet Moutier 530 m Please select a discipline

The Gorges de Moutier, located near the town of Moutier, presents an intriguing geological formation which is enhanced by its vicinity to public transportation; a road and a railway squeeze through the narrow gorge beneath its incredible limestone protrusions. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Raimeux ridge, or Grande Arête, has been attracting climbing enthusiasts. The "opening" of a second ridge, the "Arête Spéciale" or "Petite Arête" in 1945, turned Moutier into a proper climbing hotspot. In the past, so many climbers made pilgrimage to the rocks of the Gorges de Moutier that they caused traffic problems on the main cantonal road. Today, the increase of climbing areas in the region and elsewhere, as well as the tendency to want as many routes as possible in one place, has made it somewhat calmer in the Gorges de Moutier. Additionally, the increase in traffic (noise, pollution) is quite a dissuasive factor for climbers.
