Long tour to the westernmost summit in Val Bregaglia

Those who love to stay overnight in style and enjoy an extensive breakfast buffet will get their money’s worth in Soglio, a showcase village in Val Bregaglia. However, it is better to indulge in these treats after climbing Pizz Gallagiun, as this tour requires a very early start. Up and down there is a total of 2000 metres to walk. Moreover, the itinerary is exposed to the south so that even in the fall hikers are sure to sweat in torrents. But the splendid view the summit offers is worth the effort.

Route description

Soglio – Pass da la Prasgnola
Already in Soglio the signpost shows the way to Pass da la Prasgnola, albeit with a different spelling: Pass de la Prasignola. On the first segment to Däir markings are sparse, but you cannot miss the direction, as there is only one walkable trail. Leave Soglio westward, first on the paved road, then on a dirt road crossing the bridges at P. 1147. Shortly after the bridges the hiking trail branches off ascending westward through the forest towards Däir (1610 m). Above Däir and after a stretch through the forest traverse a deep ditch of a creek to the alp Vest. The trail zigzags up to Läira (1893 m), the highest alp dwelling on this mountain. With every step you climb higher the granite peaks of the southern Val Bregalia loom more and more impressively. Above Läira (at ca. 1930 m) a signpost shows left (west) towards Passo del Turbine. However, you have to turn right. At first the trail is hardly visible. Several paths criss-cross, and it is not before a stretch of about 100 m that you will find the white-red-white markings again which lead to Pass da la Prasgnola (2724 m) via Scalotta and Paven. Apart from a few stretches with only a faint path, the trail is distinct. However, there is an old trail which is occasionally still visible. Equally old, circular markings (a red point with a white edge) appear every now and then. Absolutely do not follow this old trail, as it leads through scree gullies with a high risk of falling rocks. The new trail is marked with the usual white-red-white stripes. Right below the col a few exposed passages are equipped with chains.
Pass da la Prasgnola – Pizz Gallagiun – Pass da la Prasgnola
As soon as you step on the col (before the lake charted on the map), turn left (west). Between the abyss on the left and rocky slabs to the right there is a ramp with grass and scree, on which a faint path leads upwards. From ca. P. 2875 the faint path disappears in the scree of a terrace. Some cairns show the way on this flat stretch. A large cairn on the south ridge is visible from afar, as well as the path leading up to it on the slope below. From the cairn follow the south ridge on scree and boulders up to the summit. The view goes across the peaks of Avers, Bregaglia and far to the west those of Val Mesolcina. In between there is Italian territory with the city of Chiavenna, about 2800 m below. Return to Pass da la Prasgnola on the same route.
