The pinnacle above the perfectly circular lake

Actually, Poncione di Tremorgio is not a very eye-catching appearance. However, it offers a view across the circular Lago Tremorgio to Leventina and the 1000 other Ticino summits. This and the descent through the magnificent landscape of Valle dei Cani make it a premium hiking destination.

Route description

Lago Tremorgio – Leiarozza

From the summit station of the aerial cable-way hike to the restaurant on Lago Tremorgio and ascend the face to Alpe Campolungo. Along stripes of white dolomite the trail, now marked white-blue-white, winds its way up the ridge to the saddle above the small lake Leiarozza.

Leiarozza - Poncione di Tremorgio

Some minutes above the small lake branch off slightly to the right at ca. 2460 m to ascend pathless on a distinct ridge between some small lakes and rocks up to the crest and to the summit of Poncione di Tremorgio (2669 m).

Poncione di Tremorgio - col P. 2537

Descend on the wide ridge marked with cairns past P. 2609 to the col at 2537 m (Valle dei Cani).

Col P. 2537 - Rifugio Garzonera - Alpe Pesciüm

From Valle dei Cani (col 2537 m) descend (it is occasionally rather steep and slippery) to the shining blue Lago di Cara. Follow the white-blue-white markings to the col at P. 2458 and on coarse scree across two moraine ridges until 2300 m, where the terrain becomes gentler. Boulders polished by the glacier alternate with green depressions, small lakes and creeks. You reach the ridge above Lago della Valletta, which you follow on a direct line to reach the alp building and Rifugio Garzonera (ca. 1975 m). In a few serpentines the trail leads down to the signpost at Zemblasca (1798 m). Continue to Alpe di Ravina, and past the valley station of the ski- and chair-lift hike on a small rocky ledge back to the summit station of Pesciüm (1745 m).

Pizzo della Sassada – Rifugio Garzonera 1 h 15 min.

Rifugio Garzonera – Pesciüm 1 h 45 min.

Difficulty / Material: On Poncione di Tremorgio some orientational skill and the occasional use of the hands are needed, but the route is never exposed. The route from Leiarozza to the summit is not easy to find in bad visibility. The trail marked white-blue-white through Valle dei Cani is fairly steep and slippery on the descent to Lago di Cara and around P. 2458, but the rest of the stretch is unproblematic.
