Schreckhornhütte - an impressive journey along the Lower Grindelwald Glacier

The hut path to the Schreckhornhütte has a long history of change which will probably continue without end. Time and again, great sections of the path have been washed away by torrents, or lost in landslides and have had to be altered/ rebuilt. The most striking event so far happened in early summer 2005 when a moraine bank slipped away by the site of the former Gasthaus Stieregg. This popular mountain restaurant had to be abandoned and the path remade over 100 meters higher. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of such events, the journey to the Schreckhornhütte will always be unique. The difficult steeper places are well secured with steel cables. But warning! - caution is necessary in heavy rainfall when the otherwise passable streams can swell and become hazardous.

Route description

Pfingstegg - Berghaus Bäregg
From the Pfingstegg follow the partly exposed, but well trodden hiking trail as it rises gently, high above the Gletscherschlucht (canyon) in a southerly direction through the forest, then out above the tree line to roughly 1580 m before some steep ground. Climb this, past the ruins of the old Bäregg hut to reach the current Berghaus Bäregg at 1772m.
Berghaus Bäregg - Schreckhornhütte
From Berghaus Bäregg follow the blue-white marked path onwards. This leads first to Bänisegg, where the valley turns a corner, then along sunny grassy slopes beneath the Glattwang. The following rocks at about 2000m are overcome by using artificial steps and chains. Follow the path to the Rots Gufer (crossing the stream and a steep step partly secured with steel cables). Above the Rots Gufer, the path runs above the eastern shore of the Upper Ischmeer glacier, crossing several streams and passing beneath the Schwarzegg (remnants of the hut from 1877). From here turn the final corner to find the long anticipated Schreckhornhütte (2527 m).
Direct from Grindelwald.
From Grindelwald train station head down to the Lütschinenbrücke (P. 986), south east below the village center, then on up the red-white marked mountain path right of the cable car via Restaurant Marmorbruch to join the route to Berghaus Bäregg (1772 m); 2 hours. (The journey is shortened by 1 hour if the cable car Grindelwald-Pfingstegg is used.)
