On the way in primeval landscapes

Spitzflue and Fochsenflue are mighty mountains with sheer cliffs rising up from Schwarzsee. While Spitzflue needs to be climbed, Fochsenflue has a mountain hiking trail up to the summit. Still, viewed from Untere Euschels (one of the seven "buvette"-type restaurants along the way), Spitzflue looks almost impossible to climb. Anybody who makes it to the top and signs the summit book, can be proud of themself.

Route description

Schwarzsee Bad – Spitzflue saddle
From Schwarzsee Bad follow the hiking trail via Unteri Rippa (1366 m) and St. Antoni Brecca (1400 m) until Rippetli (1483 m). From here take the trail, sporadically marked white-blue and partially overgrown, which ascends the west-facing slope of a bowl with a small lake (1502 m) to reach a saddle (ca. 1670 m, unnamed on the map). There is a possibility to descend to Obere Euschels.
Spitzflue saddle – Spitzflue – Fochsenflue
From the saddle the trail marked white-blue-white zigzags up to the beginning of the Spitzflue north-east ridge (ca. 1740 m). Follow this ridge to the summit cross, which stands almost on the highest point of the north summit (ca. 1950 m). A metallic ladder is followed by a very exposed traverse, before iron pegs help to overcome a steep passage. From the north summit follow the narrow ridge to reach the Spitzflue-S summit (1954 m). Descend on the south-west ridge or rather slightly to the left of the ridge line in the steep, grassy face interspersed with rock. Scrambling you reach a saddle at ca. 1880 m. Now ascend the grassy north ridge of Fochsenflue until below a rocky escarpment, then traverse left to reach the mountain hiking trail. Follow it to the summit cross of Fochsenflue (1974 m).
Fochsenflue – Euschelspass – Schwarzsee Bad
The descent is on the mountain hiking trail on the south-east face, until one branches off right to reach the bowl with the Fochsenhütte. Descend eastward to the road across Euschelspass (1567 m) and the col itself. Follow the road to the "buvette" at Unter Bödeli (1240 m). Now on an unmarked trail descend to a pedestrian bridge (1107 m) and again on the marked hiking trail descend to Schwarzsee Bad via Hubel Rippa (1140 m). Alternatively continue to follow the road from Unter Bödeli to Schwarzsee Gypsera. Both end-points offer the opportunity to swim in the lake.
Variant 1 : Bypassing the Spitzflue
If the crossing of the Spitzflue is too demanding, the Fochsenflue can also be reached directly from the Breccaschlund via a red-white marked mountain path. At Rippetli (1483 m) keep in the direction of Schopfenspitz, then turn into a small valley at P. 1605 before the Türmli. The mountain path leads into a saddle northwest of the Fochsenflue, from where the summit is reached west of the cross; unpleasant in wet conditions , T3.
