The big cone

Those who want to climb Spitzmeilen, should travel by public transport, as this region offers so many access possibilities that it is ideal for deciding spontaneously where to descend or to spend the night at Spitzmeilenhütte. The tour described here has relatively few metres of vertical height and can be undertaken in one day. Spitzmeilen, a limestone peg surrounded by red and green verrucano, requires climbing on the last 80 metres of vertical height

Route description

Maschgenkamm - Wissmeilen – foot of Spitzmeilen

From Maschgenkamm ascend on white-red-white marked mountain hiking trails across the Ziger ridge to reach Zigerfurgglen. Now traverse the slope above Alp Fursch to Calanshüttli. Continue to the north-east ridge which leads to Wissmeilenpass. A mountain hiking trail follows this ridge, at the end on scree, to reach Wissmeilenpass between Wissmeilen and Magerrain. Now traverse Wissmeilen (P. 2481) and descend to the depression at the foot of Spitzmeilen. Bypass the Spitzmeilen summit on a faint path on the south-west side (T3+).

Summit ascent Spitzmeilen

On the east side of the summit there is a chimney through which one climbs to the summit. Be careful when other hikers are climbing up or down (rock fall). Descend to the foot of the summit on the ascent.

Foot of Spitzmeilen - Spitzmeilenhütte - Maschgenkamm

From the foot of Spitzmeilen descend east-north-eastward on a white-red marked faint path (T3), initially on the Schönegg ridge and then northward directly to Spitzmeilenhütte. From Spitzmeilenhütte follow the popular hiking trail in slightly hilly terrain via Laufböden and Fursch back to the starting point. A last, strenuous re-ascent leads back to Maschgenkamm.

Variant: descent to Engi via Mülibachtal

From Wissmeilenpass take the marked mountain hiking trail which leads to Engi through Mülibachtal via Mülibach Oberstafel and Skihütte Mülibachtal. T2, 3 h.

Time: Maschgenkamm summit station - Calans - Wissmeilen - Spitzmeilen: 3½ h. Spitzmeilen - Schönegg - Spitzmeilenhütte - Fursch – Maschgenkamm summit station: 3 h. Variant: descent to Engi, from Wissmeilenpass ca. 3 h.

Difficulty / Material: The difficulties are limited to climbing the summit proper. The fairly steep chimney on the east side is equipped with chains and fixed ropes (two passages are grade III). The climbing passages require experience or talent. Moreover, there is a risk of rock fall. Using a rope and wearing a helmet is recommended (fix the rope on the anchors of the chains; there is also an abseil anchor).
