Ridge tour high above Sarnersee

From the shady upper Melchtal one hikes steeply up to the sunbathed, wide pastures, which cannot be seen from the valley floor. Then follows a lively up and down across the ridge with a splendid view and finally down to Flüeli Ranft, where in the 15th century Niklaus von Flüe lived, known as Brother Klaus. He was a hermit living in the Ranft chine and became famous as a counsellor and caregiver for the people and political leaders of Central Switzerland and beyond, as far as Milano.

Route description

Stöckalp – Wandelen

From Stöckalp (1071 m) hike westward crossing the ski-lift and the creek to reach P. 1209. Here turn left and follow the steep trail with its wooden steps (actually for sheep) and other security measures to the plateau of Stepfen. The trail leads almost horizontally on pastures to reach P. 1529. Now follow the Innenbach until ca. 1660 m, where the well-marked trail goes up to the chalets of Innenbach. Continue cross-country up the pasture towards P. 1970 on the ridge between Bocki and Heitlistock. Now hike northward through the face of Heitlifeld to reach the ridge again at P. 1964. Now follow a wide grassy ridge until the summit cross on Wandelen, at 2104 m the highest point of the tour.

Wandelen - Arnigrat - Höch Dossen

On the descent to Astelhorn the trail narrows and leads rather steeply, but only for a short stretch, to the breach at P. 2069. Here it is slightly exposed and slippery. Ascend and continue up and down via Astelhorn and more small „summits“ along the entire Arnigrat to P. 2028. Leave the marked trail north-eastward and follow the ridge to P. 1987. Continue on the ridge steeply down, bypass some escarpments on a narrow path and ascend to Hohmad. From here on the trail, slightly below the ridge line, is on the sunny face, still enjoyable to Höch Dossen (1885 m).

Höch Dossen - Flüeli-Ranft

After Höch Dossen you switch to the shady side of the mountain, traverse steep pastures and forest, bypass a number of boulders and follow the ridge again down to Dössli. Shortly afterwards you reach a wide pasture, where you search in vain for trail markings. The faint trail leads directly to the chalets of Oberbüelen (1378 m). The markings are more and more visible leading you to Unterbüelen. From here hike down northward via Barfeld and Oberhus to Flüeli (727 m).

Difficulty / Material: The main difficulties are on Arnigrat with some short, slightly exposed passages. Markings are scarce all along the way, but they are not really missing. The route logically follows the ridge aiming directly at the large chalets of the alp.

The ascent from Stöckalp to Stepfen is through a steep forest; it is equipped with some wooden stairs, steel cables etc., but the trail is not exposed.
