Einsattelung am Fuss der Altmann-Nordwestflanke, bedeutender Übergang vom Appenzeller Land (Wasserauen, Meglisalp) in das Toggenburg (Thurwis, Unterwasser/Wildhaus). Zugleich Ausgangspunkt zweier vielbegangener Bergwege, dem Lisengratweg und dem Weg durch die Fliswand zum Altmannsattel. Der Pass mit seinem Berggasthaus ist in allen Routenkombinationen ein bedeutender Etappenort.
