The Mättenberg, mountain in the middle (hence the name); between Eiger and Wetterhorn. Massive NW bulkhead at the start of the Schreckhorn chain, which extends right down to the glacier outlets of the Finsteraar and Lauteraar glaciers. Magnificent panoramic mountain that is rarely climbed. Interesting traverse from Mettenberg to Gwächtenjoch, which is also suitable as an acclimatization tour for the Schreckhorn.
First ascent of the Mettenberg probably made by Friedrich Lehmann, pastor of Grindelwald, with a chamois hunter, before 1817.
