In the rocks above Noiraigue in the Val de Travers nests the wallcreeper bird (Tichodroma muraria). Since August 2004, there's also been a Via Ferrata. To protect the birds, the via ferrata remains closed until June 30th. In order to emphasise this ban, all safety cables are removed from the start and end on New Year's Eve each year. The "Wandläufer", rather small, but with its red and black wings with white spots at their tips, and its long, curved beak is easy to recognise, and is a rather rare visitor to the Swiss mountains. It prefers to breed on tiny, inaccessible rock ledges and often flutters butterfly-like up the vertical walls while still singing: "zizizitüi" or "tütiiti tütiit" (search it on youtube). The human wallcreepers make a poor imitation. The good half a kilometre route is well secured and not very difficult, but sometimes breathtakingly airy, especially in the crux. "there is a vacuum," says Michel Gentil, and he should know. After all, he built this; the first Via ferrata in the Swiss Jura.
