It is a short, but pretty high alpine ski tour, which requires some scrambling to reach the top of the characteristic rock head. If the snow is frozen, an ice axe and crampons are helpful. The landscape of the unique Plaine Morte offers an extraordinary atmosphere. The tour can be made as a way of accessing Wildstrubelhütte or as a day tour with Crans Montana as the starting and end point. In this case the descent is on the ski runs of the Montana skiing area.

Route description

Plaine Morte summit station – ski depot

From the summit station of the Violettes–Plaine Morte aerial cableway go to a breach (P. 2851) south-west of Wisshorelücke (2903 m) by descending to a depression east of Pointe de Vatseret and ascending westward (45 min.). (From Wildstrubelhütte traverse the south-west face of Wisshore to reach the same breach.) Continue south-westward to a depression and ascend a ramp to P. 2874. On the northern side, bypass Rohrbachstein on a large ledge without gaining any height to reach the southern foot of the summit structure. There is a ski depot at 2900 m. If the snow conditions are safe, the summit can also be bypassed on the southern side.

From the ski depot climb a short couloir to the right of the marked summer trail, then follow it left to reach the north ridge, which leads up to the summit with its huge summit cross.

Descent

On the ascent until the breach close to Wisshorelücke: now you either traverse to Wildstrubelhütte or you go back towards the summit station of the aerial cableway. You do not need to ascend all the way to the station, use Col du Sé Mort / Rezlipass (re-ascent 150 metres of vertical height) instead. Then, ski down to Crans Montana on the ski runs.
