The longer you stay on the train, the more 'light' the ascent.

The challenge of the Rugghubelhütte approach can be mitigated with varying dosages of mechanical transportation... i.e it can be anything from a short stroll - to a 4 hr mountain marathon with 1300 m elevation gain.

Route description

Bergstation Brunnihütte - Holzstein - Planggenstafel - Rugghubelhütte

The easiest way to get there is to take the chairlift to the Brunnihütte (1867 m) and hike across the basin of Rigidal to P. 1876 at Holzstein, where the direct approach from Engelberg or Ristis joins on. This approach option means just 430 m of height gain.

Bergstation Ristis - Rigidalstafel

Slightly longer: From the Ristis cable car mountain station (1599 m) you can easily reach the Engelberg path via Rigidalstafel. Now follow the normal approach via Planggenstafel to the Rugghubelhütte.

Engelberg - Rigidalstafel - Holzstein

The longest variant: From Engelberg (999 m) follow the marked footpath up to Rigidalstafel (1747 m). Continue via Holzstein and Tüfelstein to the Planggenstafel (1968 m) joining the normal approach to the Rugghubel hut.

Time: The ascent time and the elevation gain are calculated from the top station of the Brunnihütte chairlift.

A direct ascent from Engelberg takes 4 hours; from Ristis: 2 to 2½ hours.
