Thanks to the Schönhalden aerial cableway Steingässler is a fairly short and popular ski tour. Depending on the snow conditions P. 2177 or P. 2193 directly above Chammhüttli can be your target. The escarpment at Chammhüttli is not to be underestimated. If the avalanche situation is critical, "Pfufisegg" (P. 1950) from Madems Hintersäss is a rewarding alternative.

Route description

Berghaus Schönhalden - Steingässler

From Berghaus Schönhalden (1487 m) ascend southward on the summer trail via Fulriet to reach P. 1711. On a gentle ascent, continue to Hintersäss (1776 m). Now traverse the depression following the summer trail, at the end very steeply (up to 37°), to reach the bowl below Vorderchamm and the small hut at ca. 2045 m (the locals call it «Chammhüttli»). Now ascend to the summit of Steingässler.

Descent to Saxli

The descent is very rewarding, if the snow conditions allow skiing down to Saxli (bottom station of the aerial cableway). You do not need to return to the bottom station proper: from Fulriet ski down in the fall-line and across Gafröawise to the bend of the road at ca. 1010 m west of the Saxbach. Follow the road until the clearing of Valö. Then traverse the clearing north-eastward to reach a trail close to the pylon of the aerial cableway (not charted on the map). Now continue down through the forest (sometimes on foot) to reach the pastures of Mutten. Via Mutten and Rutz you can ski directly down to the Saxli, Saxlirank bus station.

Remarks: Beware of the avalanche risk in the bowl below Vorderchamm. Often the highest point to the north-west of «Chammhüttli» is climbed (ca. 2180 m), as one might find better snow conditions. Steingässler can be swept snow-free by the wind.
