Traversing Rossberg
The wide Rossberg, the highest peak of the canton of Zug, has its highest elevation on Wildspitz, where a popular inn is located. From all sides numerous trails go up to the ridge. On this tour you hardly ever hike alone. However, there are some less popular itineraries. Two of them, one for the ascent, one for the descent, are presented here.
Route description
Arth – Bigstein
From the Arth, Klostermatt bus stop, follow the mainroad NE for about 500 m, then to the right on Rufibergstrasse past the railway lines (481 m) and turn right. After a set of houses take the small road towards Baltisberg and leave it right away to the left to ascend a faint path in a pasture. There is now rock fall protection nets in place. You will need to go in between two sections to get to the forest. In the forest the now more distinctive path zig-zags up. At ca. 640 m it turns right. Here and there you find old markings. After a while the terrain becomes rockier. At ca. 740 m the path turns right and shortly afterwards left again. Finally, it traverses horizontally northward and winds its way up to the marked official hiking trail at ca. 960 m. Ascend it to a plateau in the forest at 1020 m. On the way you pass a metal ladder and a fixed rope. From there a faint path, equipped with railings, goes southward to reach the balcony called Bigstein. Caution: the itinerary differs from the trail charted on the map.
Bigstein – Wildspitz – Langmatt
Go back to the main trail and ascend to a bifurcation. Here turn left (signpost) to reach P. 1119, then P. 1132 and follow the trail on a wide grassy ridge to Gnipen. The agreeable trail goes up and down until Wildspitz, the nameless elevation P. 1570 and the roofed resting area Gruobi at Langmatt (1543 m).
Langmatt – Halsegg
From the resting area follow a distinct path northward to another shelter (1521 m). From there take the trail on the right to Leiterenflue. A long ladder helps to overcome the 10-metre-long passage of nagelfluh. Continue towards Türlistock until an information board, where an arrow («Halsegg») shows right. The picturesque, narrow trail goes through the forest and across a plain to the Halsegg (1320 m) inn.
Halsegg – Sattel-Aegeri
From Halsegg descend in pastures and forest; a short stretch on an asphalted road to the dwellings at Riedmatt cannot be avoided. Follow the markings to the main road and turning right, you reach the Sattel-Aegeri railway station.
