Because the "upper" mountain range ends at the little lower Gauschla and the Alvier therefore does not occupy a conspicuous position, it is nevertheless the most famous and most visited peak of the group. It is popular because it and its summit hut are easily accessible from different locations and because it offers an excellent view. From the summit, towards the north-east, there is an important side ridge, the Barbielergrat, over which one of the three access routes leads. However, in our time, the path from Palfris through the southern flank is most frequently used ; the furthest, but shadiest access is from Berghaus Malbun via Imalschüel.
The origin of the name Alvier is not clear.
