The pyramid above Lake Lucerne

Around Lake Lucerne there are a number of spectacular and very well-known mountains, and several of them are described as a „pyramid“. However, actually there is only one that deserves this characterisation: Buochserhorn. If you sail by boat from Gersau through to Vitznau, do not forget to turn your head south-westward. Like a triangle an almost perfectly shaped mountain towers above the houses of Beckenried. Welcome to Buochserhorn!

Route description

Niederrickenbach - Trogmatt - P. 1039

From the Niederrickenbach summit station hike northward on the wide hiking trail through Bleikigraben and Hüetlerentobel, past the hamlet Gibel, and descend on a small road to Trogmatt. Cut the next wide hairpin bend, and at the signpost at 916 m (Schwandenberg) turn right on a dirt road, which goes steeply up to a clearing. Right at its beginning a faint path branches off uphill leading up to the shed at P. 1039.

P. 1039 - Ribihuisli - Guberntossen (Gitzitritt) P. 1521

A marked trail traverses the meadow up to the bifurcation at about 1110 m. Now continue eastward almost horizontally through the deep forest to Ribihuisli (1207 m). On the way you traverse a number of gullies, which can be precarious in wet conditions. At the Ribihuisli cabin (always open) you come across the white-blue-white alpine route. It zigzags up the steep forest. Soon steel cables help to negotiate the steps. The subsequent long, slightly ascending traverse north-eastward from «Gitzitritt» is also equipped with safety measures. At the end of the traverse there is a 50 m high rocky step equipped with steel cables and a 3 m high, almost vertical ladder, which almost ends at P. 1521 on the ridge.

Guberntossen P. 1521 - Buochserhorn

Now on the wide ridge hike up and down without any difficulties to the summit of Buochserhorn (1806 m).

Buochserhorn - Musenalp

From the big summit cross descend on the south ridge directly to the deepest point (P. 1593) on Bleikigrat, then on the white-blue-white marked trail ascend astonishingly easily through the rock spires of Rätzelen to the cross on Musenalper Grat (1774 m). Now descend in wide pastures to the restaurant on Ober Musenalp, from where you take the tiny cable car to Niederrickenbach.

Niederrickenbach Dorf

Time: Niederrickenbach – Schwandenberg P. 1039 1 h 15 min.

Schwandenberg P. 1039 – Buochserhorn 3 h.

Buochserhorn – Ober Musenalp 1 h 30 min.

Difficulty / Material: On the long traverse from P. 1039 to Ribihuisli the trail has occasionally collapsed. The alpine route from there to Guberntossen («Gitzitritt») leads through a very steep forest, is equipped with steel cables and offers a multitude of holds and footholds on roots and trees, but it is very precarious in wet conditions.

On Bleikigrat there are also a number of metallic safety measures (ladders, cables) but the grade of difficulty does not exceed T3+.
