The First gondola and the Oberjoch chair lift save a lot of metres of vertical height. From Oberjoch, high above Grindelwald, one enjoys an unobstructed view to Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The descent from Faulhorn to Bussalp make for an easy, but exciting traverse.
Route description
From the Oberjoch summit station (Grindelwald – First skiing area)
Take the bus from the Grindelwald railway station to the bottom station of the First gondola or walk there in 15 min. (https://www.jungfrau.ch). Ride the gondola up to First and take the chair lift to the Oberjoch summit station (2498 m). From there descend the Widderfeld bowl south-westward via P. 2391 to reach the winter hiking trail at Gummihitta (ca. 2260 m). Ascend westward past Bachsee to reach the col at Gassenboden (2552 m). Continue northward past the buildings of one of the world’s oldest mountain hotels to the summit.
Descent to Bussalp
Ski down the wide south-facing slopes to Bussalp.
Variant: descent to Schwendi
If there is sufficient snow, you can ski down to Schwendi, the major part off the sledging run. Ski down to Holzmattenläger (bus stop) using the sledging run. Then descend southward in pastures to reach a trail east of Unterläger. Take the trail south-eastward, leading steeply down to the In Matten clearing. Continue to the bridge across the Abbach (1256 m) and the hairpin bend at P. 1240 (Weidli, bus stop and bar). If there is still sufficient snow, east of the creek you can continue to descend south-westward in pastures to reach the main street (931 m) and ultimately the Schwendi railway station.
