Via ferrata above the Gibidum (1436 m) reservoir, which is fed by the melting ice of the Aletsch and the Oberaletsch glacier. The ferrata runs, in places (at least during high water) barely a hand's breadth above the milky-green surface, before ascending once more up into the rock face. One special attraction is the 86 metre long suspension bridge, which spans the reservoir in the top third. The mountain guides from Blatten did not hold back with this one. The route utilises many artificial steps, and short vertical passages are defused with sturdy iron rungs. You even have to balance along wooden beams in places! It's just a pity that you can not see the Aletsch glacier at all. Our tip therefore: Take the cable car from Blatten on the Belalp, then via Hotel Belalp (view of the Aletsch!) Follow a marked footpath down to the suspension bridge and cross to the (more interesting) east side of the lake before heading to the dam wall. There's been a second suspension bridge over the Massa since 2008, which is even longer (124 m!) and more spectacular. Those who starts on the Riederalp, may cross both bridges on their tour, thus gaining a maximum of impressions - ice and iron, open trails and the athletic Ferrata. Normal route takes you via the Riederfurka, Grünsee, the bridge over the Massa gorge, Oberaletsch, via ferrata bridge, east route of the Ferrata, the dam wall and back to the Riederfurka. Guaranteed to give a full mountain day!
