Bauenstöcke: neighbours, but very different from each other

From Flüelen they look like two almost identical pictures of the same mountain: the Bauenstöcke. From a close range, however, Niderbauen Chulm (formerly called «Seelisbergerkulm») and Oberbauenstock («Baberg») turn out to be totally different characters, in terms of hiking as well as the landscape, which makes the traverse even more interesting. This is a Lake Lucerne tour par excellence, due to the central position directly above the lake.

Route description

Alp Weid – Lauweli
From the Alp Weid summit station hike south-westward on the marked trail in the pasture. Slightly more steeply ascend past a cabin to the beautifully located Lauweli (1528 m).
Lauweli – Niderbauen Chulm
From Lauweli continue to ascend and past large boulders traverse a talus above the alp to aim at the distinct breach to the left below Niderbauen Chulm. Iron pegs help to climb the 1½ metres of the first rocky outcrop. Afterwards an iron stair leads up to a cave. Through the cave a 20 metre high iron ladder leads to the grassy gully, in which a good path zigzags up to the saddle north-east of Gütsch. Now in a few minutes hike up to Niderbauen Chulm (1923 m).
Niderbauen Chulm – P. 1761
From Niderbauen Chulm descend west or east of Gütsch in moderately steep pastures to the bifurcation at P. 1626 («Merlieggen»). From here on a large trail hike to a distinct saddle (1599 m), then climb up some wooden stairs to P. 1761.
P. 1761 – Oberbauenstock
At the signpost at 1761 m the white-blue-white marked trail begins, leading on the sometimes precipitous grassy face to the grassy shoulder at P. 1882. Traverse the following talus southward. Now a steep schrofen and rock face with good holds offering grade I climbing passages makes the access to the south-west ridge possible. From here a distinct path winds up slightly to the right of the ridge, thus in the south face, to Oberbauenstock.
Oberbauenstock – Lückli
From the summit descend on the same route. However, we leave the shady face of the ascent to the right and hike on the long ridge, sometimes slightly below the ridge line in the south face to Lückli (1877 m) below Zingel.
Lückli – Stockhütte
From Lückli descend through to the ruin at P. 1650, then continue via Chruteren and somewhat roughly (T3+) to the lower trail. As the trail charted in the map via Rigital, Stelli and Lochhütte is hardly maintained, increasingly overgrown and often slippery, branch off right at the bifurcation at about 1450 m to Wandeli and reach Ronen via Haseneggli. From there walk to Stockhütte on a dull road (called «Rinderbühl» on the map).

Difficulty / Material

On the ascent to Oberbauenstock there is a steep schrofen and rock face with scrambling passages (T4+, fixed ropes), followed by a sometimes precipitous grass and schrofen ridge (T4). The ascent to Niderbauen Chulm is easier: T3+ with a few protected passages, a ladder and a very steep grassy slope. The orientation is unproblematic, but the tour is not for wet days.
