The Alpine Journal

Die Aufmerksamkeit des Alpine Club war im vergangenen Jahr wieder geteilt zwischen den Expeditionen in weit entlegene Gebiete und den Besteigungen in den europäischen Alpen, wobei die letztern, und speciell die Schweizeralpen, in den touristischen Artikeln sehr gut vertreten sind. Ich nenne hier: The Fluchthorn and its neighbours by W. A. B. Grylls Adams; The ascent of Aconcagua; The Alps of New Zealand by G. E. Mannering; A note on the " Southern Alps " of New Zealand by Douglas W. Garwood; The ascent of Aconcagua and Tupungata; Mountaineering in the Canadian Rockies III by S. E. S. Allen; Glacier exploration and new ascents in Norway in 1896 by Wm Cecil Slingsby; Some rock climbs in Norway in 1896 by H. C. Bowen; Ascents in Mexico by A. R. Hamilton; The Caucasus in 1896 by Vittorio Sella; Climbs among the peaks of the Adyrsu, Central Caucasus by H. W. Holder; A Spitzbergen glacier expedition by Victor H. Gatty; Aconcagua and Mount St. Elias. Bei den historischen und wissenschaftlichen Artikeln liegt das Übergewicht des Interesses in den Alpen. Dieselben sind: The proposed Jungfrau railway; The Alteis ice avalanche by Charles Slater; The narrative of an ascent of Mont Blanc in 1830 by the Hon. E. Bootle Wilbraham; Hotel bills ancient and modern by Charles Marrett. Dazu kommen noch die von mir wieder viel benutzten stehenden Rubriken: New expeditions, Alpine accidents und Alpine notes. Das alles giebt zusammen mit den den Alpine Club speciell angehenden Geschäfts- und Ausstellungsberichten das Bild einer ungemein vielseitigen und lebhaften Thätigkeit. Entschiedene Fortschritte hat das Alpine Journal in der Illustration gemacht, für welche dem jetzigen Herausgeber offenbar größere finanzielle Mittel zur Verfügung gestellt sind, als den frühern. Sogar ein kleineres Panorama: The Range of Hornsund's Tind from the Bastion Ridge, konnte er bringen. Die andern Illustrationen, Phototypien und Photographien, sind folgende: Adama from the N. W.; Mishirgi- Tau from the S. E.; Glärnischfirn and Bächistock; Lake and Mount Assiniboine; Aiguille du Tronchey from the slopes of Mont de la Saxe; Gumachi from the North; The Weisshorn from the Dom but; The Tour d'Arpisson from above the chalets. Sie sind ausnahmslos sehr gelungen.
