Bibliographie de l'Himalaya

Au début d' avril 1934, comme notre navire arrivait en vue de Bombay, Willy Merkl me remit, avec une aimable dédicace de sa main, une petite brochure qui venait de sortir de presse et qui portait ce titre: Himalaya-Biblio-graphie ( 1801-1933 ). J' avoue que mon premier sentiment fut un mélange de surprise et de dépit, car j' avais moi-même commencé des recherches dans ce but. Une fois de plus l' Allemand arrivait premier, même avant l' Anglais, alors que dans cette brochure, le 95 % des ouvrages mentionnés sont dus à des auteurs anglo-saxons...

Il fallait bien l' énergie de Merkl pour avoir trouvé le temps de s' occuper de bibliographie à côté de tout ce que son expédition au Nanga Parbat lui coûtait de préparatifs et de soucis! Puis ce fut un sentiment d' admiration et finalement de reconnaissance pour l' énorme travail accompli et qui m' était ainsi épargné.

Il est vrai que Merkl, après en avoir conçu l' idée, ne fit que préfacer cette Bibliographie. Tout le travail des recherches revient au Dr Hermann Bühler, directeur de l' Alpenvereinsbücherei de Munich, et à son puissant état-major. Cette tâche énorme ne pouvait être menée à bien, sur ce continent, que par une bibliothèque comme celle de Munich, une des plus riches du monde pour ce qui concerne la montagne. Elle fut accomplie dans le temps record de cinq semaines!

En 48 pages in-16° nous trouvons une liste de 736 articles, livres ou cartes groupés par ordre alphabétique des auteurs, plus un index, le tout en petits caractères. Pour celui qui s' intéresse à l' Himalaya, cette brochure vaut son pesant d' or. Elle n' est pas rigoureusement complète, mais contient tout ce qui peut être utile au conquérant. Une seule erreur importante à signaler: les Records of the Geological Survey of India ont été confondus avec les Records of the Survey of India. Ceux-ci manquent. Ils comptent actuellement 25 volumes et contiennent une quantité de contributions intéressantes ( voir plus loin ). Cette précieuse bibliographie est comprise dans les publications du « Verein der Freunde der Alpenvereinsbücherei ». On peut se la procurer au prix de un mark à l' Alpenvereinsbücherei, Knöbelstrasse 16/Sgb. r. II, Munich.

Il est probable que l' Alpenvereinsbücherei publiera une suite, mais comme cette suite peut tarder et que l' Himalaya est à l' ordre du jour, j' ai pensé bien faire en groupant ici les articles et livres parus depuis 1933 ou ceux qui ne sont pas mentionnés dans la bibliographie générale. Cette liste n' a pas la prétention d' être absolument complète. C' est une simple contribution. Les limites géographiques sont celles que nous nous sommes imposées dès le début de cette étude, mais comme beaucoup de voyageurs ont franchi l' Himalaya pour aller plus loin ( Turkestan, Tibet, Chine, etc. ), notre bibliographie est finalement plus vaste que nous ne l' avions prévue.
